Chapter 1: The Night He Stopped Being Careful

My husband believed that being pregnant, raising two children, having no job, and depending on him financially meant I would never have the courage to leave.

Then he brought his mistress into our home and calmly announced that she was moving into the guest suite.

Fifteen minutes later, I came downstairs with my children, three packed suitcases, and a divorce petition he had no idea existed.

My husband brought his mistress into our dining room while I was eight months pregnant, took her hand in front of our children, and announced that she would be living under our roof.

That was the exact moment I realized the entire scene had been planned long before either of them stepped through the door.

My name is Charlotte Palmer, and I had been married to Brandon Palmer for nine years.

Our six-year-old son, Lucas, was seated beside me at the mahogany dining table, while our four-year-old daughter, Amelia, was complaining that the chicken on her plate had somehow been cut into pieces that were "too square."

Brandon's mother, Evelyn Palmer, had joined us for dinner, along with his younger brother, Justin.

Then I heard Brandon coming down the hallway.

There was another pair of footsteps beside him.

High heels.

Brandon entered first, wearing the calm, controlled expression he usually used during difficult business meetings.

Standing beside him was Cynthia Vance, wearing an emerald evening dress that looked far more suited to an expensive cocktail lounge than a Wednesday night family dinner.

I had seen pictures of Cynthia before.

Brandon had never acknowledged that she existed, but men who become convinced their wives are financially trapped eventually stop taking precautions.

Evelyn froze with her fork halfway to her mouth.

Justin slowly lowered his bourbon.

Lucas moved closer against my side.

Brandon looked directly at me.

"Charlotte, I think it's time we finally stopped pretending everything is normal."

I placed Amelia's knife carefully beside her plate.

Brandon reached for Cynthia's hand.

"Cynthia and I are together, and since the guest suite is empty, she'll be staying here for the foreseeable future."

Amelia frowned.

"Is she staying for dinner?"

No one answered her.

Cynthia gave me a small, self-assured smile as Brandon slipped an arm around her waist and waited for my reaction.

That waiting was important.

For months, Brandon had been building a completely different version of me for anyone willing to believe him.

Charlotte had become overly emotional during her pregnancy.

Charlotte worried about money for no reason.

Charlotte struggled to handle stress.

Charlotte had become possessive when it came to the children.

Charlotte might become unpredictable if Brandon ever decided to leave her.

Taken individually, those statements could sound like the concerned observations of an exhausted husband.

Put together, they created a carefully constructed story that could make almost anything I did afterward look unstable.

And now he had gathered an audience.

His mother.

His brother.

His mistress.

Our children.

Brandon expected me to finish the story for him by losing my temper.

Instead, I looked at Cynthia.

"That's an interesting decision."

Her smile faltered.

Brandon blinked.

"What is?"

"Bringing Cynthia into this house."

His jaw tightened.

"That's all you have to say?"

"For now, yes."

I slowly pushed myself to my feet because at eight months pregnant, even standing up required preparation.

My back ached almost constantly, my ankles were swollen by the end of every day, and the baby had recently discovered that my ribs made excellent targets.

I reached one hand toward Lucas and the other toward Amelia.

"Come upstairs with me, please."

Brandon stepped directly into my way.

"We're not finished talking."

For nine years, I had softened my words before saying them to him, apologized before asking questions, and second-guessed my own memories whenever his version sounded more certain than mine.

That night, I stopped doing all of it.

"Actually, Brandon, we're finished."

Then I walked around him.

Downstairs, inside my handbag, a small recorder was still running and capturing every word.

Brandon had absolutely no idea.

What happens when Brandon realizes Charlotte was ready long before he made his move?
