Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Know

— Part 2 —
I shoved the test behind the cabinet and splashed cold water on my face.
"Fine," I called back.
"Just tired."
The door handle turned anyway.
Liam stepped in, took one look at me, and his expression shifted.
He'd known me since we were nine years old.
He always knew.
"Emma."
"I said I'm fine."
He glanced at the cabinet.
Then back at me.
"How far along?"
I couldn't answer.
My throat closed completely.
He sat down on the edge of the tub and waited, the way he always waited, patient and quiet, until I finally broke.
"Six weeks," I whispered.
He didn't ask whose.
He already knew I'd been different since that night at the Obsidian.
Quieter.
More careful.
Like someone watching for headlights through a dark window.
"You have to tell him," Liam said.
"I can't."
"Emma—"
"You don't understand what he is." My voice dropped.
"Or what his family would do if they found out who I really am."
Liam went very still.
"What do you mean, who you really are?"
I opened my mouth.
Then my phone lit up on the bathroom counter.
The name on the screen made every muscle in my body freeze.
It wasn't a number I recognized.
But the single word typed in the message below it turned my legs to water.
*Elizabeth.*
