Chapter 1: The Two Lines That Changed Everything

My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped the pregnancy test onto the bathroom floor, because those two pink lines didn't just mean I was pregnant.
They meant I was carrying the child of Alessandro Vitali, one of the richest and most powerful billionaires in Chicago, and if he discovered the truth, I had no idea whether he would protect me or destroy me.
Six weeks earlier, my biggest problem had been student loans and surviving double shifts at a diner.
I was twenty-five, trying to save enough to finish nursing school, living in my childhood best friend Liam Carter's spare bedroom because after my parents died, there was nobody else to catch me if I fell.
Then one catering shift changed everything.
The charity gala was inside Chicago's Obsidian Hotel, beneath chandeliers that looked like frozen rain.
I wore a borrowed black dress, carried champagne, and followed one rule: stay invisible around powerful people.
Then Alessandro Vitali stepped into the ballroom.
Everyone in Chicago knew his family name.
Newspapers called him a real estate billionaire, investor, and philanthropist, and the Vitalis had spent three generations building one of the most powerful business empires in the country.
I should have avoided him, but while carrying a tray, I stumbled.
Champagne glasses started sliding toward the marble floor when a strong hand suddenly caught my elbow.
"Careful," he murmured.
I looked up into amber eyes and forgot how to breathe.
Alessandro stood there in a charcoal suit, watching me with an intensity that made a ballroom full of wealthy strangers disappear.
"What's your name?"
"Emma," I whispered.
That wasn't my real name.
My real name was Elizabeth, but I'd been living as Emma long enough that hearing Elizabeth could still make my bl00d run cold.
Alessandro repeated my false name slowly, then asked why he'd never seen me before.
"I'm filling in tonight."
"Then I'm fortunate."
His fingers brushed mine when he took a champagne glass, and that tiny touch frightened me more than it should have.
Hours later, my supervisor handed me a cream envelope containing a hotel key card and five words that changed my life.
Room 1520.
A conversation, nothing more.
I should have gone home to Liam, our leaking faucet, cheap furniture, and my safe little bedroom.
Instead, I stepped into the elevator and pressed fifteen.
Alessandro was waiting beside the window with Chicago glittering behind him.
His tie was gone, his collar open, and for the first time he didn't look like a billionaire who could buy almost anything he wanted.
He looked lonely.
"You came," he said.
"I shouldn't have."
"No," he replied softly.
"But here you are."
We talked for hours, and strangely, that became the part I regretted most.
He listened while I spoke about nursing school, emergency medicine, losing my parents, and missing the feeling of having someone leave a porch light on for me.
He told me about old crime novels, black coffee, and quiet mornings before the world started demanding things from him.
By dawn, talking wasn't all we had done, and I left knowing I had crossed a line I could never completely uncross.
What terrified me most was what Alessandro never asked.
He never asked why I had really been at that gala.
Thank God, because the truth behind that answer was more dangerous than anything he could have imagined.
Now, six weeks later, I sat barefoot on Liam's bathroom floor in my ketchup-stained diner uniform, staring at two pink lines.
"No, no, no," I whispered.
My stomach twisted as the smell of Liam's Colombian coffee slipped beneath the bathroom door.
I barely reached the toilet before getting sick, and then I heard footsteps approaching.
"Emma?" Liam called from the hallway.
"You okay?"
I stared at the pregnancy test in my trembling hand, suddenly realizing I had only seconds to hide the one secret Alessandro Vitali could never be allowed to find.

Emma is pregnant with a billionaire's child — and she's been living under a false name.
