Lucy didn't sleep.
She sat on the edge of Ethan's small cot and stared at the blank screen long after Julian ended the call.
Her mother's necklace.
The one she thought she'd pawned.
The one the pawn shop owner had told her was "already collected by your husband" before she even got there.
She had believed that too.
In the morning, she left Ethan with the neighbor and took the bus to the address on Edward's card.
It was a law office on the fourteenth floor of a glass building downtown.
A woman in a grey suit met her at the door.
"Mrs.
Vance.
Your grandfather asked us to show you something."
She slid a folder across the table.
Inside was the original deed to the Pinecrest mansion — signed in Lucy's name.
Below it was a transfer document dated six weeks after Ethan's birth, while Lucy was still in the hospital.
Her signature was on it.
Except Lucy had never signed anything.
"That's not my handwriting," she whispered.
The lawyer nodded slowly.
"We know.
And there's something else."
She placed a second document on top.
It was a marriage certificate.
Julian Vance.
Married.
Three weeks ago.
The bride's name was not Lucy.
Lucy's hands went cold.
She turned the page — and saw the wedding venue listed at the top.
The Pinecrest Estate.
*Her* house.
