Chapter 1: The Shack He Was Never Supposed to Find

"My grandfather came to visit me two years after leaving me a multimillion-dollar mansion.
Instead, he found me living in a shack.
"Who took everything?" he asked.
I never answered.
Across town, my husband was celebrating his wedding to another woman with the inheritance he'd st\*len from me.

"Why are you living here, Lucy?"
Edward Vance couldn't hide the slight tremor in his voice.
In front of him stood a single-room cinderblock structure with unpainted walls, a corrugated metal roof held down by heavy stones, and a tiny stove that barely lit.
Out on the dirt patio, Lucy Vance was scrubbing school uniforms inside a blue plastic tub while her five-year-old son, Ethan, did his homework on top of an upside-down soda crate.
Lucy looked up, completely bewildered.
"Because it's all we can afford, Grandpa."
Edward gazed around the rundown property in the industrial outskirts of town.
Decades ago, he had founded a massive nationwide medical lab franchise.
For the past two years, he had been under the impression that his granddaughter was living comfortably in the luxury estate he bought her as a wedding gift in the wealthy enclave of Pinecrest.
"What about the mansion in Pinecrest?" Edward asked, his voice tight.
"The one I deeded entirely in your name two years ago?"
Lucy dropped the wet shirt back into the tub.
"What mansion?"
The old man went completely still.
When Lucy gave birth to Ethan five years ago, she suffered severe medical complications and spent weeks recovering in the hospital.
Her husband, Julian Vance, had offered to take charge of the paperwork, handle the trust fund details, and manage their move.
Afterward, Julian told her that Edward had lost millions in a failed corporate investment and that the property was never actually purchased.
Julian had also convinced her that her grandfather was furious with her for marrying a man "without a prominent family name."
Since then, Julian claimed he was traveling constantly for work as an engineer at an auto plant hours away.
He sent back meager amounts of money, made late-night video calls from dark rooms, and insisted every sacrifice was "for the family's future."
Lucy had believed every word.
She sold her car, pawned her late mother's pearl necklace, and dropped out of her accounting degree.
When Ethan fell ill, she took out high-interest loans just to afford his antibiotics.
There were weeks when she drank plain coffee for dinner so her son could eat eggs.
Edward reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a business card, and wrote an address on the back.
"Go to this address tomorrow morning," he said softly.
"Don't tell Julian.
And please...
don't sign another piece of paper until I tell you to."
That night, Julian called as he always did.
He appeared on the screen wearing a stained work shirt, complaining about his exhausting night shift.
"It's brutal out here, Lu," he groaned into the camera.
"Honestly, I didn't even have time to eat dinner."
Lucy watched him in silence.
But in the faint reflection of a glass door behind him, she caught a glimpse of a grand illuminated staircase, an elaborate arrangement of fresh orchids, and a woman dressed in silk slipping into the frame.
"Where are you, Julian?"
"Just in the rental house I share with the other engineers," he lied smoothly, shifting the camera angle.
For a brief second, the camera caught a glimpse of a dining table set with crystal wine glasses, an ivory-and-gold invitation card, and an open velvet jewelry box.
Inside the box lay the sapphire necklace that had belonged to Lucy's late mother...
