Chapter 2: Someone Still Inside

Part 2 ⬇️

I didn't put my phone away.

I dialed 911 right there on Brenda's front lawn.

Brenda's composure cracked instantly.

"You're overreacting," she snapped, but her voice had shifted — higher, faster.

"It was a sleepover.

Girls play games.

They give each other silly names.

I crouched down again and kept my voice low.

"Lily.

Sweetheart.

Who is Chloe?"

Lily's eyes finally moved — not to me, but to the front door.

Her grip tightened.

"She didn't go home," Lily whispered.

"She was still there when the lights went off."

The 911 operator picked up.

I started talking.

Brenda took one step toward me, then stopped herself.

That's when I noticed her hands.

She was turning her phone over and over in her palm — screen down, knuckles white.

She wasn't angry anymore.

She was waiting for something.

Then, from somewhere deep inside the house, a door closed.

Quietly.

Deliberately.

Lily flinched like she'd been sl@pped.

"There's someone still in that house," I told the operator.

"Please hurry."
