Chapter 1: The Morning She Forgot Her Name

My Eight-Year-Old Niece Came Back from a Sleepover Refusing to Answer to Her Own Name.

I pulled up to Brenda Cole's pristine suburban driveway at 8:00 AM sharp to pick up my eight-year-old niece, Lily.

The heavy oak front door was already wide open.

Brenda was marching down the front steps, dragging Lily by the upper arm.

Her manicured fingers dug so violently into the fabric of Lily's pink windbreaker that the shoulder seam was audibly ripping.

"Take her," Brenda snapped, shoving Lily forward so hard she stumbled onto the concrete walkway.

Brenda hurled Lily's overnight bag onto the lawn, the zipper busting open and spilling pajamas into the wet grass.

"She's been nothing but a disruptive nightmare since midnight.

I've had it with her."

I jumped out of my car, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Get your hands off my niece!" I shouted, rushing to position myself between them.

When I looked down, my bl00d ran cold.

Lily was trembling uncontrollably, her knees knocking together.

But that wasn't what made my stomach drop.

She was wearing a pair of scuffed, cheap canvas sneakers that were at least three sizes too small.

Her heels were crushing the backs of the shoes, her toes visibly curled and cramped in agony.

Lily didn't own these shoes.

"Lily, are you hurt?" I knelt down, reaching out to touch her shoulder.

"Sweetie, look at me.

What happened to your new sneakers?"

Lily didn't look at me.

She stared blankly at Brenda's knees, her breathing shallow and fast.

"I'm not Lily," she murmured, her voice entirely flat.

"I'm Chloe."

Brenda stepped forward, her expensive wedge heels scraping loudly against the concrete.

She loomed over us, her face flushed with defensive rage.

"See?

This is exactly the disturbed nonsense I'm talking about," Brenda spat, kicking Lily's spilled pajamas further into the yard.

"She's been doing this psycho routine for hours.

Get her off my property before I call the police."

"I'll gladly call them for you," I fired back, pulling my phone from my pocket.

Lily suddenly grabbed my wrist with terrifying strength.

She leaned in, her lips brushing my ear, and whispered something that paralyzed me.

"Mrs.

Cole made all of us switch names before the man arrived."

I froze, staring at my niece's terrified eyes.

Before I could process the horror of those words, I looked past Brenda's legs, through the open front door.

Six brightly colored backpacks were neatly lined up against the hallway wall.

But scattered across the living room carpet, perfectly laid out in a row, were seven sleeping bags.

And lying on top of the seventh sleeping bag was a nametag that read Chloe.

What did Lily witness inside that house — and who was the man Brenda was hiding?
