I stared at Hailey's message until the words blurred.
Renovation.
Architect.
Deposit.
Skylar was still eating across from me, carefully, like she was rationing every bite.
I kept my face calm for her.
But my hands were already moving.
I opened my email and searched for anything with the words "renovation," "contractor," or "property." What I found made my stomach drop.
There were eleven emails.
All sent from Brandon's address to someone named R.
Caldwell — Architect & Property Consultant.
The first one was dated four months ago.
*"My wife won't be an issue.
She trusts me with the accounts.
We can move forward with the conversion plans as discussed."*
Conversion plans.
I clicked further.
There were floor plans attached.
Our home.
Our address.
They weren't renovating.
They were converting the house into a rental property — and the ownership documents had already been quietly redrawn.
My name had been removed.
I sat very still.
Skylar looked up.
"Mom?
Are you okay?"
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
It was Brandon.
I let it ring once.
Twice.
Then I picked up.
"Charlotte." His voice was tight.
"Whatever you think you're doing, you need to stop.
There are people involved in this that you don't want to make angry."
"What people, Brandon?"
Silence.
Then, very quietly: "Just come home."
