Chapter 2: Since Mommy Stopped Coming Home

Part 2 ⬇️

I didn't wait for her to finish.

I shifted Lily to my left arm, reached past my mother, and snapped the lock open.

Diane grabbed my sleeve.

"Ryan, I'm warning you—"

"Get your hand off me."

The door swung open.

The smell hit me first.

Damp.

Stale.

Like a room that hadn't had fresh air in weeks.

I reached for the light switch.

One bare bulb flickered on.

There was a small blanket folded on the floor near the water heater.

A plastic cup.

A little stuffed rabbit with one ear missing — the one Lily had been given at the hospital the day she was born.

My throat closed.

"How long?" I couldn't look at my mother.

"How long has she been sleeping down here?"

Diane said nothing.

Lily pressed her mouth to my ear and whispered, "Since Mommy stopped coming home."

I went still.

I turned slowly.

"What do you mean Mommy stopped coming home?"

Lily looked confused.

Like she thought I already knew.

"Grandma said Mommy went away.

She said you knew."

My wife had texted me every single day for the past two weeks.

I pulled out my phone with a shaking hand.

The last message read: *Miss you both.

Give Lily a kiss from me.*

Diane was already backing toward the hallway.

"Mom." My voice came out quiet.

Dangerous.

"Where is Sarah?"
