Chapter 1: The Screams Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

My Daughter's Screams Were Coming From Inside The House — And Nobody Knew I Had Come Home Two Days Early.

"Grandma, please…

my knees hurt."

I froze in the hallway.

My suitcase slipped from my hand.

There was Lily, kneeling on the hardwood floor with a wet rag in both hands.

Tears covered her little face.

My mother, Diane, stood over her with her arms crossed.

"Keep scrubbing."

Lily sniffled and whispered, "I'm tired."

Diane pointed at a dirty spot near the kitchen.

"Then clean faster."

I felt something inside me turn cold.

"Mom?"

Diane spun around.

Her face changed instantly.

"Ryan?

You weren't supposed to be home until Friday."

Lily looked up at me.

"Daddy!"

She tried to stand.

Diane snapped, "I didn't say you could get up."

My daughter dropped back onto her knees.

That hurt worse than anything I had ever witnessed.

I stepped toward them.

"What is happening here?"

Diane laughed nervously.

"She made a mess, so I'm teaching her responsibility."

"She's four."

"She's spoiled."

Lily reached toward me.

"Daddy, please take me."

Before I could reach her, Diane moved forward.

Her shoe came down on Lily's small hand beside the rag.

Lily screamed.

"Grandma, stop!"

I lunged forward and pulled my daughter into my arms.

"What the hell is wrong with you?"

Diane stumbled backward.

"Don't you speak to me like that in my own son's house."

Lily buried her face against my chest.

Her whole body was trembling.

I looked at her red little hand.

"Did Grandma do this before?"

Lily didn't answer.

Diane immediately said, "Of course not."

I looked down at my daughter.

"Lily, Daddy needs the truth."

She slowly lifted her face.

"Grandma said if I told you, you wouldn't come home anymore."

My mother's face went pale.

I stared at her.

"What did you tell my daughter?"

Diane opened her mouth.

Then Lily whispered something that made me stop breathing.

"She makes me sleep downstairs when Mommy isn't here."

I turned toward the basement door.

There was a small lock hanging on the outside.

Diane rushed in front of me.

"Ryan, don't open that door."

I held Lily tighter.

"Why?"

My mother's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Because there's something down there you were never supposed to see."

What is behind that basement door — and how long has Lily been living like this?
