Chapter 2: The Signature Was on the Wrong Line

🔴 **PART 2**

We got Mom dry and warm at our place.

She hadn't eaten a real meal in days.

While I made soup, Daniel sat at the kitchen table with the closing documents Evan had finally emailed over — probably thinking that would shut us up.

It didn't.

Daniel went quiet for a long time.

Then he said, without looking up:

"Your mother's signature is on the wrong line."

I didn't understand.

He turned the document toward me and pointed.

"The seller signs here.

Someone signed here instead." He tapped a line lower on the page.

"That's the notary block.

Your mother didn't sign this document.

Someone signed it for her — in the wrong place — and a notary stamped it anyway."

My hands went cold.

"Can they do that?"

"No," Daniel said.

"They cannot."

He picked up his phone and called the name from his contacts.

The man answered on the second ring.

I heard Daniel say: "I need you to run a notary license number for me.

And pull any other closings tied to this same agent in the last eighteen months."

He paused.

Listened.

Then his expression changed in a way I had never seen before.

"How many?" he said quietly.
