Chapter 3: The Number Without a Name

I saved the number and stared at it for the rest of the evening.
Four words.
No context.
No follow-up.
I typed back: *Who is this?*
The message showed delivered.
Then nothing.
No typing indicator.
No reply.
I set my phone on the kitchen counter and poured a glass of water I didn't drink.
The apartment felt quieter than usual.
Not peaceful quiet.
The kind of quiet that means something is coming.
My laptop was still open from the meeting.
I closed it and sat down on the couch.
The voicemails were piling up.
Dad had called twice more.
Mom had left a message that was mostly crying with my name somewhere in the middle.
Julian had called four times in ninety minutes.
Chloe once.
I didn't listen to any of them.
What I kept coming back to was not the cancelled vendors.
Not Julian's panic.
Not even Dad's thumbs-up still sitting in the group chat like a small, permanent wound.
It was those four words.
*You don't know everything.*
At eleven-fifteen, my phone lit up again.
Same number.
This time, a photo.
I opened it slowly, the way you open something when part of you already knows it will change things.
It was a screenshot.
A conversation between Julian and Chloe.
The timestamps were from eight months ago, three months before they had come to me asking for help.
Julian: *She'll pay for it.
She always does.
Just let me handle her.*
Chloe: *Are you sure?
What if she asks questions?*
Julian: *She won't.
She thinks this is about family.
That's her whole problem.*
I read it three times.
Then I read it a fourth time, more slowly, the way you read something when you want to be wrong about what it means.
I wasn't wrong.
This was never about a wedding they couldn't afford.
This was a plan.
Julian had known exactly what he was doing when he came to me.
Chloe had known.
They had discussed it, agreed on it, and then performed eight months of urgency and gratitude to keep me writing checks.
The humiliation in the group chat wasn't impulsive.
It was the exit strategy.
Once the money was spent and the contracts were signed, I was no longer useful.
So they removed me.
My hands were steady when I forwarded the screenshot to my own email.
Then I typed back to the unknown number.
*Who are you?*
This time the reply came in under a minute.
*Someone who was supposed to be the maid of honor.
Until last week, when Chloe told me I was out too.
My name is Renata.
We should talk.*
I looked at the name for a moment.
May you like
Then I typed: *Tomorrow.
Tell me where.*
