Chapter 2: The Document on the Table

The room went completely still.

Millicent's mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Caleb looked at Giancarlo — really looked at him — and something shifted behind his eyes.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Who are you?" Caleb said, his voice dropping low.

Giancarlo didn't answer him.

He turned to Rosalie instead and spoke quietly.

"Can you walk?"

Rosalie nodded, one hand still pressed against her belly.

"Then we're leaving right now."

Millicent found her voice.

"You have no right to walk into this house and—"

"This house." Giancarlo turned slowly.

"You mean the house your son bought with money he borrowed from Rosalie's inheritance?

That house?"

Caleb went pale.

Millicent stepped forward.

"Whatever she told you is a lie."

"She didn't tell me anything." Giancarlo reached into his jacket and placed a folded document on the dining table.

"Your son's lawyer did."

No one moved.

Rosalie stared at the document.

She had never seen it before.

Caleb's hand came up as if to grab it — but one of the bodyguards stepped forward without a word.

Caleb stopped.

"What is that?" Rosalie whispered.

Giancarlo looked at her with an expression she couldn't read.

"It's the reason they wanted the baby."
