Chapter 2: The Text from a Number I Didn't Recognize

Part 2 👇
I called Lauren first.
She didn't answer.
I called again.
Straight to voicemail.
Sophie sat at my kitchen table, both hands wrapped around a glass of warm milk, watching me with eyes that were too calm for an eight-year-old.
That stillness scared me more than the documents.
I spread everything across the table.
The withdrawal notices.
The fake school invoices.
The transfer paperwork with my name on it.
My hands were shaking.
I photographed every single page.
Then I called my cousin Dana, who works in family law.
"Rachel." Her voice dropped the moment I finished explaining.
"That signature on the $90,000 transfer — did Lauren ever have access to anything with your signature on it?"
I went cold.
Three years ago, after Ryan's funeral, Lauren had asked me to co-sign a condolence card to his employer.
I hadn't thought twice about it.
"Dana—"
"Don't touch those documents again without gloves.
And do not let Lauren back into your home tonight."
I looked at Sophie.
She had fallen asleep at the table, her cheek resting on her rabbit.
That was when my phone buzzed.
A text from an unknown number.
*She took more than the money, Rachel.
Check the will.*

What does that message mean — and who sent it?
Rachel thought she had the whole picture.
She didn't.
