Chapter 1: She Left Her Daughter on My Doorstep and Drove Away

"Little sister, she's your responsibility now.

I'm not coming back for her.

If you can't take care of her, contact Child Protective Services."

My sister, Lauren, said it on my front steps in Columbus, Ohio, as casually as if she were dropping off a package.

Then she placed eight-year-old Sophie's pink backpack beside my shoes, kissed the top of her daughter's head without bending down, and walked toward a dark SUV waiting at the curb.

I had never considered myself good with children.

At least, that was what I had told everyone for years.

I preferred calm apartments, clean counters, and plans that stayed exactly where I left them.

But Sophie stood in front of me wearing one red sneaker and one gray one, clutching a stuffed rabbit by one ear.

"Lauren," I called.

She never looked back.

The SUV pulled away.

Sophie watched until the taillights disappeared beyond the oak trees.

Then she reached for my sleeve.

"Aunt Rachel?"

Her fingers felt cold.

"I need to tell you something."

I knelt beside her.

"What?"

She glanced toward the road first, almost as though she expected her mother to return.

"Mom said if anybody asks where Daddy's money went, I have to tell them you took it."

My stomach tightened.

Sophie's father, Ryan, had p@ssed away three years earlier after a workplace accident.

He had left a $186,000 education trust for Sophie.

Lauren was the trustee.

I was listed as successor if Lauren ever became unable to manage it.

"I never touched that money," I said.

"I know." Sophie's mouth quivered.

"Mom said Kyle needed it more because grown-ups can pay money back."

Kyle was Lauren's boyfriend.

Sophie opened her backpack and pulled out a folded bank envelope.

Inside were withdrawal notices totaling $74,300, along with three invoices from a local school Sophie had never attended.

Then she handed me something even more alarming.

A copy of paperwork approving another $90,000 transfer.

At the bottom was my name.

And a signature similar enough to mine to make my heart race.

"Where did you find this?"

"Mom threw it in the trash.

She said they were leaving tonight."

"Leaving where?"

Sophie swallowed.

"Kyle says Dallas.

Mom said I can't come because he doesn't want a kid changing their plans."

For a moment, I heard nothing except the ceiling fan clicking above us.

Then Sophie whispered, "Auntie…

am I bad?"

Something inside me shifted.

I pulled her into my arms before I even realized I had moved.

"No," I said.

"You haven't done anything wrong."

Then I reached for my phone.

Lauren believed she had left me a child.

What she had actually left me was evidence....

---

What will Rachel do now that she holds proof of what Lauren and Kyle did to little Sophie?

And where is Lauren running to — and why tonight?
