Chapter 2: The Name That Shouldn't Exist

Lisa didn't move from the floor right away.
She sat there, hand pressed to her ribs, listening to Ryan's footsteps walk calmly up the stairs.
No argument.
No apology.
Just silence.
She pulled out her phone and opened the audio file she had recorded forty minutes earlier — the one where Evelyn had said, "Ryan knows exactly what he married.
He always has."
Lisa had thought it was arrogance.
Now she wasn't sure.
She called her contact at the investigative firm.
He picked up on the first ring.
"The woman in your office," he said, before she could speak.
"We ran her prints.
She's not a ghost.
She's been operating under three separate identities since 1987."
"Who is she?"
He paused.
"That's the problem, Lisa.
The earliest identity we found — her original name — it matches your mother's maiden name."
Lisa went completely still.
Upstairs, she heard Ryan's voice.
Low.
Controlled.
He was on a call.
"It's done," he said.
"She found the files.
Just like we knew she would."
The line went quiet.
Then Evelyn appeared at the top of the stairs, looking down at Lisa with an expression that wasn't anger anymore.
It was relief.

What Lisa uncovered in the next hour exposed a conspiracy that had been built around her entire life.
