Chapter 1: The Moment She Stopped Being a Wife

Lisa Bennett covered the mortgage.
Both vehicles.
Every household bill.
And six thousand dollars each month for her retired Army mother-in-law, Evelyn.
Then Evelyn demanded an additional five thousand dollars for an extravagant "military charity gala."
When Lisa finally refused, Evelyn grabbed a ceremonial Army baton and struck her with such force that she fell to the floor.
Her husband Ryan — a decorated former Army officer — stood on the staircase and watched.
He did absolutely nothing.
Lisa stared at him and whispered, "You're really just going to stand there?"
Ryan dropped his gaze back to his phone.
That was the exact moment Lisa stopped thinking like a wife.
She sent one photo, one audio file, and six months of banking records to the investigators she had previously worked with through her cybersecurity company.
By sunrise, they had uncovered that Ryan had concealed almost four hundred thousand dollars from her.
Evelyn's charity had been routing money through accounts registered to dec\*ased soldiers.
A missing Army witness was still alive.
Lisa's closest friend was helping put together a plan to seize control of her company.
And her marriage had been arranged long before she ever met Ryan — all because the missing witness was secretly her own brother.
But when Military Police arrived at the house, they found evidence showing that the gala had never been the final move.
Someone had already drawn her brother into Lisa's office.
And the woman sitting behind her desk had officially been d\*ad for decades.
---
What does that woman want with Lisa's brother — and who arranged all of this from the very beginning?
