Chapter 1: The Price of a Photograph

"If you married me, then tonight you're going to fulfill your duties as my wife," said Raymond Carver, seventy-five years old, as he raised his glass in front of more than a hundred guests.

Paige Dawson, barely twenty, lowered her eyes.

The luxury hotel ballroom in Miami was filled with businessmen, retired politicians, distant relatives, and curious guests who had come more to watch the spectacle than to celebrate the wedding.

No one understood what such a beautiful young woman was doing beside a man old enough to be her grandfather.

Raymond thought he understood it, at least.

For forty years, he had built a chain of hotels in San Diego, Las Vegas, and Miami.

Two marriages had ended badly, and he had never had children.

So when he met Paige, he believed life was giving him one last chance.

What no one knew was how their relationship had begun.

Gavin, Paige's stepfather, was a broken man drowning in alcohol and debt.

Months earlier, he had lost a fortune gambling with Raymond during a private gathering.

Desperate, he begged for more time.

Raymond refused.

Until he saw a photograph of Paige.

"I'll forgive what you owe me," he told him, "if you convince the girl to marry me."

Gavin agreed.

Later, he regretted it and begged Raymond to leave her alone, but it was already too late.

Raymond had become obsessed with the idea of starting a new life.

Trapped by her family's debts and her mother's illness, Paige eventually agreed.

The wedding was extravagant.

Mariachi musicians, imported champagne, white flower arrangements, and a dessert table straight out of a magazine.

Raymond smiled whenever he heard his business associates whispering.

"The old man bought himself youth," one said.

"And she bought herself an inheritance," another replied.

Raymond didn't care.

Until a waiter stepped toward him with a folded piece of paper.

"Mr.

Carver, a boy left this for you."

Raymond opened it.

"CANCEL THE PARTY.

IF YOU SPEND TONIGHT WITH THAT WOMAN, YOU WON'T LIVE TO SEE MORNING."

The color drained from his face.

He thought of Gavin.

Could it be him?

A resentful business partner?

An ex-wife?

He tore up the note, ordered another tequila, and decided he wouldn't let himself be intimidated.

Hours later, at his residence in Coral Gables, he took Paige by the arm and led her into the bedroom he had prepared for their wedding night.

She was pale.

"Don Raymond, please…

I'm not ready."

"You're my wife now."

He moved closer.

Paige stepped back, caught the edge of the bed, and shut her eyes in terror.

Then Raymond let out a strange groan.

The strength suddenly left his body, and he collapsed to the floor.

Paige froze for a few seconds.

Then she called 911 with trembling hands and left the house without looking back.

At the hospital, doctors discovered something that left everyone stunned.

Raymond had suffered a stroke caused not only by alcohol, but by a substance someone had slipped into his drink.

And while he fought to regain consciousness, someone began draining his accounts, selling his companies, and taking out millions in loans in his name.

The worst part was that Raymond still had no idea who was destroying everything he had built.

And even less did he know why that night, without realizing it, he had been about to make the biggest mistake of his life.

He could never have imagined what was about to happen…
