Chapter 2: They're Outside

Evan picked up the envelope before Helen could reach it.

His hands were shaking as he tore it open.

I pulled myself up against the cabinet, holding Noah against my chest, trying to breathe.

"Evan—" Helen's voice came out sharp.

"That is private.

It is not your concern."

"My wife's name is on it.

My son's name is on it." He looked up at her.

"Everything in this house is my concern."

He read it once.

Then again.

The color left his face.

"Mom." His voice dropped to something I had never heard before.

"What did you do?"

Helen straightened in her chair.

"I protected this family.

The way I always have.

That girl was not managing.

Anyone could see it."

"She just had surgery five days ago."

"She was struggling.

I made a call.

One call."

Evan turned the letter so I could see it.

It was from a family services office.

A welfare concern had been filed.

Against me.

Against my ability to care for Noah.

Helen had reported me.

My own mother-in-law had reported me to the authorities — while I was still recovering from surgery — while she was the one refusing to let the nurse in.

"When did you send this?" Evan asked.

Helen said nothing.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went completely still.

"It's them," he said quietly.

"They're outside." 😨
