Chapter 1: The Envelope Beneath Her Plate

😨 I woke on the kitchen floor because my five-day-old baby, Noah, was screaming beside me.

Cold tile pressed against my cheek.

My body felt impossibly heavy, and pain tore across my C-section incision when I tried to move.

Groceries were scattered across the floor.

I had been ordered to carry them inside myself despite my discharge instructions telling me to rest.

At the dining table, my mother-in-law Helen calmly continued eating the meal I had cooked for her.

"Drama queen."

Then the front door slammed.

"Maya?"

My husband, Evan, rushed into the kitchen and froze when he saw me on the floor.

His eyes moved from my shaking body to the bruise on my cheek — and then to his mother.

😳

"What exactly did you do to my wife?"

Helen insisted she had done nothing.

But Evan began noticing everything: the dirty pans, the unopened iron tablets, the postpartum instructions Helen had ignored — and the nurse she had secretly sent away.

Then something slipped from beneath Helen's plate.

A cream envelope.

My name was printed across it.

**MATERNAL NOTICE — NOAH CARTER.**

Helen lunged toward it.

Evan stepped in front of her.

"What is that?"

For the first time, Helen looked terrified.

What is inside that envelope — and why did Helen try to hide it from Maya?
