Margaret couldn't move.
Her legs felt like concrete.
Walter stood up slowly, adjusting the robe, and had the nerve to speak first.
"This isn't what it looks like."
"Then tell me what it looks like, Walter." Her voice came out quiet.
That frightened her more than if she had screamed.
The young woman grabbed her dress from the chair and backed toward the bathroom without a word.
Walter stepped closer.
"Margaret, listen to meβ"
"How did you get a key to my son's apartment?"
He went silent for just a second too long.
"Samuel gave it to me."
The room tilted.
"He gave it to you?
Samuel gave his father a key and never told me?"
"I asked him not to.
I told him I needed a quiet place to rest sometimes.
That the office was too stressful." Walter's voice was steady.
Practiced.
Like he had rehearsed this.
"He didn't ask questions.
He just handed it over."
Margaret thought about her son.
Hardworking, trusting Samuel.
Who would never suspect his own father of using his home for this.
Then something caught her eye on the nightstand.
A phone.
Face up.
A message still glowing on the screen.
She didn't mean to read it.
But the name at the top stopped her cold.
It wasn't the young woman's name.
It was Chloe's.
