Chapter 1: The Key She Was Never Supposed to Use

I went to my son's apartment with a duplicate key, convinced I was going to catch my daughter-in-law with another man.

"Today this lie ends," I thought before opening the bedroom door.

But the woman inside wasn't her: beside a bottle of champagne, I found my own husband after 32 years of marriage…

and what I heard next was even worse.

**PART 1**

"If that woman is ch:ea:ting on my son, I'm throwing her out of her own house today," Margaret muttered as she inserted a key into a lock no one knew she had.

It was a little after four in the afternoon in a modern building in the Northwood district of Minneapolis.

The hallway was empty.

Margaret had chosen the time carefully because she knew her son, Samuel, would be at the engineering firm until after seven and that her daughter-in-law, Chloe, usually taught yoga and Pilates in the afternoon.

Margaret had been slipping into the apartment for months.

She didn't consider herself an intrusive mother-in-law.

In her mind, she was "a mother taking care of her son." She checked whether there was food in the refrigerator, whether Samuel's shirts were properly ironed, whether the bathroom was clean, and even whether Chloe bought products that were too expensive.

She had the duplicate key made without telling anyone, convinced that one day it would come in useful.

And according to her, that day had arrived.

The afternoon before, she had seen Chloe leaving a shopping center, laughing with an elegant man who drove a silver SUV.

He opened the passenger door for her, and Chloe stepped in without hesitation.

Margaret barely slept that night.

To her, the explanation was obvious: Chloe had a lover.

"My poor son works himself to the bone while she's out riding around with another man," she kept telling herself, feeding her anger.

She entered the apartment expecting to find evidence.

But the kitchen was spotless.

There were no glasses, plates, gift bags, or anything suspicious.

Instead of calming her down, that made her even more suspicious.

"She cleaned everything before meeting him," she thought.

Then she heard laughter behind the bedroom door.

First, a young, flirtatious female voice.

Then a man's voice.

Margaret froze.

Her heart pounded so hard against her chest that she had to lean against the wall.

Then she heard the unmistakable sound of a champagne bottle being opened.

"Oh, my love, you really are a magician," the young woman said with a giggle.

"But what if Samuel comes home early?"

Margaret clenched her teeth.

Samuel!

The shameless woman even knew her son's name.

She walked down the hallway, imagining the scene.

Chloe with that man.

The marital bed.

The perfect betrayal.

She was already preparing the words she would use to humiliate her.

But before she could open the door, she heard the man answer:

"Don't worry.

Samuel is at work.

I got the key myself.

And Chloe won't be back until tonight."

Margaret froze.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it for thirty-two years.

She shoved the door open.

And what she saw was not her daughter-in-law.

In her son's bed was her own husband, Walter, wearing a silk robe he had sworn he lost during a trip to Columbus.

Beside him, a young woman no older than twenty-five was holding a glass of champagne.

Walter went pale.

"Margaret…

what are you doing here?"

She didn't answer.

Then the young woman touched Walter's arm and asked in panic:

"Is she…

your wife?"

Margaret felt as though her entire world had shattered.

But she still didn't know that the worst part wasn't the affair.

The worst part was how Walter had managed to turn his own son into an accomplice without him even knowing.

And what she was about to hear was impossible to believe…

---

What did Walter say next — and how did he use Samuel without Samuel ever knowing?
