Chapter 2: The Photograph in Her Pocket

My hands were shaking as I held the bank statements.
The transfers went back fourteen months.
Every two weeks.
The same amount.
The same account name.
Her name.
"Ryan." My voice came out quieter than I expected.
"Who is she?"
He finally looked at me.
But he didn't answer.
Diane stepped forward.
"You're overreacting.
It's not what you think."
"Then explain it," I said.
"Explain why my mother's signature is on a document she never signed.
Explain why her medication was in your purse.
Explain the money."
Silence.
Mom reached out and touched my arm.
Her hand was trembling.
"There's something else, sweetheart.
Something I found before they took my pills."
She reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a folded photograph.
I recognized the woman in it immediately.
Ryan made a move toward Mom.
I stepped between them.
"Don't."
He stopped.
For the first time since I'd walked into that kitchen, he looked genuinely afraid.
Not of me.
Of what my mother was still holding.
What was in that photograph — and why did Ryan need Mom silenced before I could see it?
