I stepped into the kitchen and found my mother-in-law humiliating my seventy-year-old mother beside a trash can.
Diane claimed she was teaching Margaret a lesson.
My husband defended her.
Then Mom revealed that the argument began when she asked where her medication had gone.
She pointed toward Diane's purse.
Inside, I found the missing prescription bottle, several bank statements, and a property transfer bearing my mother's forged signature.
The document would give someone else ownership of her house.
Ryan went pale when I opened it.
Mom had discovered the plan and threatened to tell me.
That was why Diane tried to frighten her into silence.
But the forged deed was only part of what they were hiding.
Before I could call the police, Mom revealed that Ryan had also been secretly sending my money to someone whose name I recognized.
My husband would not meet my eyes.
