Chapter 2: What Betsy Knew

— Part 2 —
The officer opened the folder on the hood of the police car.
I looked down and felt the ground shift under me.
My name had been removed from the deed.
Teresa's name was typed in its place.
The signature at the bottom was mine — except I had never signed it.
"That's a forgery," I said.
Teresa stepped forward.
"It's perfectly legal.
He gave me that house.
He's a good son."
The officer looked at her.
"Ma'am, step back."
She didn't.
She pointed at Amy instead.
"She turned him against me.
That woman has been poisoning my son for years.
Everything I did was to protect my family."
Amy said nothing.
She was sitting in the car holding Frederick, her eyes closed, her lips pressed together.
She had stopped shaking.
She looked like someone who had already cried every tear she had.
Then Mason spoke up from behind the officer.
"Connor, I didn't know what was in that folder.
She told me it was insurance papers."
Teresa spun around.
"You keep your mouth shut."
That's when I noticed Aunt Betsy had gone very quiet.
She was standing near the gate, staring at the ground.
She knew something.
I could see it.
I walked toward her.
"Betsy.
How long has this been planned?"
She wouldn't look at me.
"Betsy."
She finally looked up — and what she said next stopped everything.
What Betsy revealed changed the entire story.

Connor had no idea how deep this went — or who else was involved.
