Chapter 1: The Birthday That Broke Everything

I had spent months believing my mother was helping my wife.

She wasn't.

She was preparing to take control of our lives.

The truth came out on my son's first birthday.

I left work early that Friday because I wanted to surprise Amy.

I carried a birthday cake, a small pendant marked with the letter "F" for Frederick, and a blue dress Amy had admired online but never bought.

I expected to see my wife smiling.

Instead, I heard my mother through the back door.

"In this house, I make the rules."

Then she said the sentence I will never forget.

"Your wife is only useful for giving birth and washing dishes."

I stepped inside.

My home was crowded with twenty relatives.

There were expensive seafood dishes, bottles of liquor, decorations, and piles of food I had not ordered.

My mother stood proudly in a new dress, boasting that her son gave her $3,000 every month because he trusted her to take care of the family.

She made it sound noble.

In reality, that money was supposed to help Amy and the baby.

Then someone asked where my wife was.

My aunt Betsy answered,

"She's in the kitchen.

I told her to serve everybody."

I went looking for her.

I found Amy seated on a plastic stool.

Frederick was sick and burning with fever.

Amy was holding him with one arm while cleaning greasy cookware with the other.

Her hands were trembling.

Her face was pale.

She hadn't even been allowed to finish eating.

When she saw me, she whispered,

"Connor...

your mother says I need to bring everyone coffee before I can stop."

I took Frederick immediately.

His temperature was dangerously high.

"We're leaving right now."

Amy glanced toward the backyard.

"She's going to be angry."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

My wife was frightened of my mother in our own home.

I took them to the car and called 911.

When the police arrived, Teresa became hysterical.

She insisted the house belonged to her.

Then she sh0ved an officer.

That was followed by another shock.

My cousin Mason tried to slip away carrying a folder.

The police intercepted him.

Inside was the original deed to my home.

At that moment, the entire birthday celebration became clear.

My mother hadn't gathered the family to celebrate Frederick.

She had gathered them as part of a plan to seize control of my house, my finances, and everything I had built.

What will Connor do now that he knows the truth about his own mother?

And what happens to Teresa when the police find that folder?
