Chapter 2: Someone in That Crowd Knew Everything

— PART 2 —

Grant didn't speak.

He just stood there, the velvet box in the clerk's hand, the crowd watching, the security officer closing in.

Megan's voice was quiet now.

That was worse than shouting.

"How long?"

Grant looked away.

"Megan, this isn't the place—"

"How.

Long."

The blonde woman wrapped her arms around herself.

"Eight months," she said softly.

"He told me you already knew.

That you'd both agreed it was over."

Megan let out a slow breath.

Eight months.

She had spent eight months cooking dinner, sleeping beside him, believing him when he said work was stressful.

Eight months thinking their marriage was just going through a rough patch.

The security officer stopped beside Grant.

"Sir, I'm going to need you to step aside."

Grant finally looked at Megan.

And what she saw in his eyes wasn't guilt.

It was calculation.

"Don't do anything you'll regret," he said quietly.

"The house is in my name.

So is the joint account.

You walk away from this calmly, or you walk away with nothing."

The crowd murmured.

But before Megan could answer, her phone buzzed.

A message from a number she didn't recognize.

*I've been watching him for three months.

I have everything.

Don't let him leave that mall.*

Megan looked up.

Somewhere in that crowd, someone knew the truth.
