Chapter 1: The Bracelet She Was Never Supposed to See
I found my husband at the mall with another woman wearing my late mother's bracelet.
Thirty-nine-year-old Megan Blake had gone to Westfield Commons to pick up a birthday gift for her daughter.
Her husband, Grant, had texted an hour earlier:
"Client meetings all afternoon.
Don't wait for me."
Then Megan turned the corner outside an upscale jewelry store and stopped.
Grant was there.
Beside him stood a stunning blonde woman in a fitted burgundy dress, laughing while Grant fastened a diamond bracelet around her wrist.
Megan recognized that bracelet instantly.
Her mother had worn it for thirty-two years.
After the funeral, Megan kept it locked in her bedroom drawer.
Two weeks earlier Grant had told her he was taking it to be repaired.
Megan walked straight toward them.
"That's my mother's bracelet."
Grant's smile vanished.
The woman glanced down at her wrist.
"Grant said it belonged to his family."
Megan stared at her husband.
"Take it off."
Grant stepped between them.
"Not here, Megan."
"You lied to me.
You st*le from me.
Take it off."
People nearby began turning.
Grant lowered his voice.
"Stop embarrassing me."
Megan reached toward the bracelet.
Grant abruptly pushed her away.
She lost her balance and fell backward onto the polished floor as her shopping bags scattered across the walkway.
The mall went silent.
A woman rushed forward to help Megan up.
A man near the escalator shouted, "What the hell is wrong with you?"
Grant didn't apologize.
He looked down at Megan and said:
"Look what you made me do."
That was the moment the crowd turned on him.
A security officer started walking toward them.
The blonde woman had gone pale.
She pulled the bracelet from her wrist.
"Grant…
you said she knew."
Megan looked at her.
"Knew what?"
The woman swallowed.
"That you two had been separated for almost a year."
Megan slowly stood.
"We had dinner together for our anniversary three nights ago."
The woman stepped away from Grant.
Then the jewelry clerk hurried out carrying a small velvet box.
"Mr.
Blake—you forgot your engagement ring."
Grant froze.
The woman stared at him.
"You said you were waiting until the divorce was final."
Megan's expression changed.
"What divorce?"
Grant's face went white.
