Chapter 5: The Sister-in-Law Who Blinked First

Hailey was already at the coffee shop when I arrived.
She was sitting at a corner table with both hands wrapped around a cup she hadn't touched.
She looked like she hadn't slept either.
Her social media polish was gone — no ring light, no careful angle.
Just a twenty-six-year-old woman who was frightened.
I sat down across from her and said nothing.
"I didn't know about the second loan," she said.
"I want you to know that first."
"What did you know about?"
She looked at her cup.
"The renovation plan.
Gertrude came up with it about a year ago.
She said the house needed updating and that you'd never agree to spend money on it, so they had to find another way."
"Another way," I repeated.
"She said it was your house but it was Brandon's family home too.
That he had a right to improve it." Hailey's jaw tightened.
"I know how that sounds now."
"What was your role in it?"
"I was supposed to manage the social media for Vantage Build Group.
Make it look like a real company.
Post photos of completed projects — they were stock images — write reviews, build a web presence." She finally looked up.
"They told me it was just to make the application look more credible.
That it wasn't hurting anyone.
That the loan would get paid back from the renovation resale value when you eventually sold."
"It's my house, Hailey.
I'm not selling it."
"I know that now." Her voice cracked slightly.
"I think I knew it then too.
I just — Gertrude makes it very hard to say no to her."
I watched her for a moment.
She wasn't performing.
The fear was real.
"You said there are things I don't know.
About who pushed Brandon into this."
Hailey set down her cup.
"The registered agent for Vantage Build Group.
The man whose name is on the company registration."
"I found the name," I said.
"I know Brandon knows him."
"His name is Ray Cutler.
He and Brandon have been friends since college.
But it's not a friendship, Charlotte.
Ray has been holding something over Brandon for years.
Something that happened before you met.
I don't know exactly what — Brandon has never told me the whole story — but every time Brandon tried to pull back from the plan, Ray reminded him of it."
My hands were flat on the table.
"Brandon was being coerced."
"I think so.
But Charlotte—" She leaned forward.
"That doesn't mean he's innocent.
He still signed things.
He still let Gertrude treat you and Skylar the way she did.
He still let it happen." She paused.
"I just think you deserve to know the whole picture before you decide what to do with it."
I studied her face.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
Hailey was quiet for a moment.
"Last night, after you left, Gertrude told Brandon that if the plan fell apart, he should tell the bank that you had authorized everything.
That you were a willing participant who had changed your mind and was now trying to claim fraud." She met my eyes.
"She said it in front of me like I wasn't there.
Like I don't matter either."
The cup between her hands had gone cold.
"She's going to try to make this your fault," Hailey said.
"And she's going to use Brandon to do it."
I reached into my bag and placed a small digital recorder on the table between us.
Hailey looked at it.
"I'd like you to say everything you just told me again," I said.
"From the beginning."
May you like
She stared at the recorder for a long moment.
Then she reached out and pressed record herself.
