Chapter 2: Four Words From a Number I Didn't Know

PART 2

I stared at Hailey's message until the words blurred.

A renovation.

An architect.

A deposit.

None of it had my name on it.

But all of it was being paid with my life.

I called Brandon.

He picked up on the first ring, which told me he had been waiting.

"Char, where are you?

The cards aren't working.

Mom is upset and Hailey said—"

"Who authorized the renovation, Brandon?"

Silence.

"It's just some updates to the house.

We talked about this."

"We never talked about this."

"Charlotte, you're always working.

I made a decision for the family."

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"Whose name is on the renovation contract?"

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"Brandon.

Whose name?"

"It's…

it's a joint thing.

Look, just come home and we can—"

"Is my house being used as collateral for a loan I never signed?"

He didn't answer.

And that silence told me everything.

I looked across the table at Skylar, who had finally finished her meal and was drawing small circles on a napkin, completely unaware that while she had been sitting alone in that dark kitchen eating instant soup, someone had been signing papers that could take the roof from over her head.

Then my phone buzzed again.

It wasn't Hailey this time.

It was a number I didn't recognize.

And the text said only four words:

*"Charlotte.

We need to talk."*
