Chapter 7: The Price of One More Lie

Three days later, Ethan, Mara, and Calla sat in a private interview room at the courthouse.
Officer Patel placed a laptop on the table.
“We found Owen at his sister’s cabin,” he said.
“He agreed to surrender the account records.”
Drea sat across from them beside her attorney.
“This is harassment,” she said.
Officer Patel opened the recording.
Owen’s voice filled the room.
“You said Ethan would never challenge the transfer.”
Drea answered, “He won’t.
If he does, we use Mara’s surrender order.”
“And the pool house?”
“She signs before anyone finds her.”
Drea’s attorney shut his eyes.
“That could be fabricated,” Drea said.
Officer Patel placed a second file beside the laptop.
“Owen gave us the original device.”
Drea leaned toward Ethan.
“You still have a choice.
Withdraw your statement, blame Owen, and I’ll tell the bank where the money is.”
“You want a deal?”
“I want you to protect Calla’s home.”
Mara pushed the forged surrender order across the table.
“You used my daughter to steal a house.”
“I gave her stability.”
“You taught her that her mother didn’t want her.”
“She was happier before you appeared.”
Calla stood up.
“No, I wasn’t.”
Drea’s face changed.
Calla held the scorched birthday card against her chest.
“I was quiet because nobody believed me.
That is not the same as being happy.”
Drea looked at Ethan.
“You’re letting a child decide our future?”
“No,” Ethan said.
“You decided it when you locked Mara behind that door.”
Months later, they faced Drea again in court.
The judge lifted his eyes from the agreement.
“Drea Hale, you have pleaded guilty to fraud, unlawful confinement, evidence tampering, and filing false court records.”
Drea’s fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“The property transfer is void,” the judge continued.
“The recovered funds will be returned.
You will serve four years in state custody, pay restitution, and obey a permanent no-contact order concerning Calla and Mara.”
Ethan sat beside Calla while Mara held her other hand.
The judge turned to Owen.
“Your law license is revoked.
Your sentence and restitution order are entered separately.”
Owen lowered his head.
Drea looked back at Sylvia and Nolan, but neither moved toward her.
A court officer approached.
Drea stared at Ethan.
“After everything I did for you, this is how you repay me?”
Ethan stood.
“You did not build our family.
You made us afraid to speak inside it.”
Drea’s eyes found Calla.
“One day you’ll understand that your mother ruins everything she touches.”
Calla looked straight back at her.
“My mother came when I called.”
The officer led Drea toward the side door.
At the threshold, Drea twisted around one final time.
“You’ll never be a family again.”
The door closed behind her.
Outside the courtroom, Ethan knelt in front of Calla.
“She may be right about one thing,” he said.
“We cannot go back to the family we were.”
May you like
Calla looked from him to Mara.
“Then what family are we now?”
