Chapter 2: The Signature That Should Not Exist

Drea’s eyes darted toward the watching guests.
“She came here uninvited,” she said.
“I found her sneaking around and locked the door until the party was over.”
“You locked Calla’s mother inside?” Calla’s father demanded.
“She’s dangerous!
I was protecting this family.”
“That’s a lie,” Calla’s mother whispered.
Calla clung tighter to her.
“Mom, why did you come here?”
“Because Drea sent me a message from your phone.
She said you were in trouble and begged me to come alone.”
Calla’s face crumpled.
“My phone disappeared this morning.”
Every head turned toward Drea.
“I don’t know anything about her phone,” Drea snapped.
“She’s trying to destroy our marriage.”
Then a familiar ringtone sounded.
It was coming from Drea’s handbag.
Calla pointed at it.
“That’s my phone!”
Drea grabbed the bag, but Calla’s father reached it first.
He pulled out the phone and stared at the open messages.
“You told her Calla was in danger,” he said.
Drea’s confidence vanished.
Calla’s mother suddenly gripped his arm.
“That isn’t the worst part.
While I was locked in there, I found an envelope hidden beneath a loose floorboard.”
She produced a folded document.
Calla’s father read the first page—and slowly looked up at Drea.
“Why does this have my signature on it?”
