Chapter 9: The Reckoning

Marcus Webb made one mistake.

He tried to get to Ray Solis before Grace did.

He called Solis on a Tuesday morning and the call was recorded — not by Grace, not by Caleb, but by Solis himself, who had been contacted by Grace the previous evening and had agreed, in exchange for a reduced exposure in the matter, to cooperate fully.

Caleb listened to the recording in Grace's office with Olivia sitting beside him.

On the recording, Marcus's voice was low and precise.

He told Solis to say nothing.

He told him the logs could be explained.

He told him that the woman making the complaint had a history of instability — he used that word, *instability* — and that no one of consequence was going to take her side over theirs.

Then Grace's voice came onto the recording, because Grace had been on a three-way call the entire time.

*Hello, Mr.

Webb.

This is Grace Okafor.

I'm recording this conversation.

I'd like to give you an opportunity to speak with your own attorney before we continue.*

There was a silence on the recording that lasted eleven seconds.

Caleb counted.

Then Marcus hung up.

Grace set her phone on the desk.

"His lawyer called me forty minutes later.

They want to discuss terms."

Olivia hadn't moved.

She was looking at the phone on the desk.

"He called me unstable," she said.

"He did."

"Because I was the easiest person to say that about."

"Yes." Grace's voice was direct and steady.

"And it didn't work."

Aldridge was contacted separately.

When Grace presented him with the entry logs showing Solis's access on the Wednesday in question, and the recording of Marcus steering blame away from his contractor, Aldridge went very quiet.

He was not a man who liked being made a fool of.

He issued a written statement within forty-eight hours formally withdrawing any implication of wrongdoing on Olivia's part.

He did it without being asked twice.

The two women Grace had found — a woman named Precious who had left the building fourteen months ago, and another named Carla who had left eight months before that — both agreed to provide statements.

Precious cried on the phone when Grace told her what they had found.

She had believed, for over a year, that she had somehow brought the suspicion on herself.

Marcus Webb's property management license was suspended pending a full investigation.

The building's ownership board terminated his contract within the week.

Ray Solis was charged formally, and Marcus was named as a secondary party to the scheme.

Caleb was in a meeting when Grace sent him the confirmation.

He stepped into the hallway to read it.

He stood there for a moment.

Then he went back into the meeting and finished it.

That evening he told Olivia.

She was in the kitchen, and when he finished she turned back to the counter and stood there with her hands flat on the surface and her head down.

"Precious thought it was her fault," she said.

"I know."

"For fourteen months." She didn't turn around.

"That's what he did.

He made her carry it."

"Yes."

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she straightened up and turned around and her eyes were bright but her voice was steady.

"Is it done?"

"It's done."

May you like

She nodded once.

Then she said, "Good," and went to check on the babies.
