Chapter 2: The Paper in His Pocket

Part 2 ⬇️

Caleb couldn't move.

He just stood there staring at Olivia while she tried to straighten up on the bench, smoothing her coat over the three sleeping babies like she was embarrassed to have been caught resting.

"Olivia." His voice came out lower than he intended.

"How long?"

She looked away.

"Mr.

Hart, please don't worry.

I'll be there by seven tomorrow.

I've never missed a day—"

"How long have you been sleeping here?"

A long pause.

One of the babies stirred.

She pressed the child gently back against her chest before she answered.

"Since the landlord changed the locks.

Six weeks ago."

Six weeks.

Caleb felt something cold move through him.

Six weeks she had shown up to his penthouse, cleaned his floors, washed his windows, folded his sheets — and then come back to a park bench with three infants.

His father George hadn't said a word.

But Caleb turned and saw the old man's face, and it stopped him cold.

George wasn't looking at Olivia.

He was looking at the shopping bag.

His jaw was tight.

His hands were shaking.

"Dad?

What is it?"

George slowly reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I think," the old man said quietly, "there is something you don't know about this woman.

Something I should have told you a long time ago."
