Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

**— Part 2 —**

The silence lasted maybe three seconds.

Then Margaret laughed.

Not a nervous laugh.

A real one.

"Documents?" she said.

"You think a piece of paper means anything here?"

Her son — my ex-husband, David — finally looked up from his plate.

He hadn't said a word since I walked in.

Hadn't even looked at Lily when she was crying.

Now he was staring at the documents like he'd seen a ghost.

"Where did you get those?" he said quietly.

"From the attorney," I said.

"The same one your mother forgot to remove from the estate after your father passed."

Margaret's smile disappeared.

Her daughter-in-law, Sandra, leaned over and whispered something in her ear.

Margaret shook her head once — sharp, fast — like she was trying to stop something from being said out loud.

But Lily tugged my sleeve.

"Mommy," she said softly.

"That lady is scared."

She was right.

Because Margaret wasn't angry anymore.

She was pale.

And then David's phone lit up on the table.

The name on the screen made everyone in that room go very still.

It was the attorney.
