Chapter 1: The Table That Was Never Hers

Grandma Kicked The Little Girl Out Of Her Chair During Thanksgiving Dinner.

Lily was only six.

She was still holding her little plate of food.

Her dress had food stains on it.

Her chair was knocked over behind her.

And everyone else kept eating like nothing had happened.

Then I heard Margaret say,

"This is a table for real family."

I looked at my daughter's face.

Her lips were trembling.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Mommy," she whispered.

"Grandma said I don't belong."

I picked her up and carried her straight to the head of the table.

Margaret stood up so fast her glass nearly fell.

"That seat isn't hers," she snapped.

I reached into my bag and placed the property documents on the Thanksgiving table.

Then I looked at every person who had watched my child cry.

"This house is mine."

The whole room went silent.

Because they had just pushed my daughter away from my own table.
