Chapter 2: The Note on the Other Side

I pressed my back against the hallway wall and held my breath.

Martha's crying grew louder.

Then Julian's voice dropped to something colder.

"She doesn't know anything.

She never did.

That's why Daniel married her."

My chest tightened.

Daniel.

My husband.

Gone for four years.

"If she signs the proxy form tomorrow," Julian continued, "the shares transfer automatically.

She'll think she's helping Leo's future.

She won't even question it."

Arthur's voice cracked.

"You're using his widow to st*al from his son."

"I'm protecting this family.

The way you never could."

I heard footsteps moving toward the door.

I slipped back into the dark hallway, heart hammering.

Back in the guest room, Leo was still asleep.

I sat on the edge of the bed and unfolded the handkerchief again.

The note.

The stranger.

The warning.

Then I noticed something I had missed before — on the other side of the paper, in tiny handwriting:

*"Check the blue folder in Arthur's study.

Bottom drawer.

He's been waiting for you."*

My hands were shaking.

Arthur knew I was coming.

He had been waiting.

But if Arthur wanted to warn me — why hadn't he just told me himself?

And who was the man on that bus?
