Chapter 1: The Stranger Who Knew Too Much

For nearly 3 hours, a stranger kept brushing his hand over my thigh on the bus while I sat beside my son on the way to see my seriously ill father-in-law.

I was furious and confused—until, just before we got off, he slipped a handkerchief into my hand and whispered, "Pretend you're dizzy…

and whatever you do, don't sign anything."

PART 1

I said nothing, but when I arrived, I discovered a will—and suddenly understood who was planning to take everything from our family.

I thought the strange man on the bus was simply acting oddly.

For nearly three hours, the tip of his shoe kept brushing against my ankle.

I was ready to turn around and confront him, but just before the bus stopped at a roadside station, he walked past my seat and quietly slipped a gray handkerchief into my hand.

"Pretend you're dizzy," he whispered without looking at me.

"And don't sign anything."

I froze.

My nine-year-old son, Leo, was asleep against my shoulder.

I unfolded the handkerchief and found a small note inside:

"Don't trust anyone in Arthur Sterling's house."

Arthur was my father-in-law.

The night before, my mother-in-law had called me in tears, saying Arthur was dying and wanted to see his grandson one last time.

So I took the first bus to Pine Ridge with Leo.

But the moment we arrived, I knew something was wrong.

Julian, my husband's younger brother, was waiting beside a black SUV, smiling like the caring uncle he always pretended to be.

Yet when I stepped inside the house, Arthur was completely conscious, seated in the living room with more than a dozen relatives.

One uncle looked at Leo and said,

"He's the Sterling family heir."

At dinner, they kept talking about "protecting the family name," "Julian's assets," and why a young widow should not be making important decisions alone.

I said nothing.

Not until late that night, when I heard Julian's voice coming from the prayer room.

"She has to sign tomorrow.

Without her, we can't touch the shares."

Arthur answered, his voice weak but firm:

"Don't drag the boy into this."

Martha began to cry.

"We've hidden the truth for more than twenty years…"

My heart pounded...

Who was the stranger on that bus — and what did he know about the Sterling family?
