Chapter 5: The Name on the Recording

The name was Margaret Voss.

Nathan's attorney wrote it down without being asked, underlined it twice, and looked up.

"She's on the board," he said.

"She's been on the board for nine years," Nathan said.

"My father appointed her."

On the recording, his father's voice continued.

*"Margaret came to me with the arrangement.

I want to be honest about that.

I didn't go looking for it.

She brought Victoria's family to the table.

She structured the co-authority provisions.

She told me it was the only way to protect the company after I was gone.

I believed her.

I was sick and I was scared and I believed her."*

A pause on the recording.

The sound of labored breathing.

*"What I didn't know — not until it was too late — was that Margaret had a separate agreement with Victoria's family.

A private one.

If the merger completed, she received a twelve percent stake in the combined entity.

She needed that merger to happen.

She needed you to marry Victoria.

And she needed Grace and Lily to stay gone."*

The kitchen was completely silent except for his father's voice.

*"I tried to reverse it.

My attorney will tell you what happened when I tried."*

Nathan looked at his attorney.

"He called me," the attorney said.

"He wanted to dissolve the co-authority provisions and update the estate documents.

We scheduled the signing for a Thursday." He stopped.

"He had a cardiac event on the Tuesday before."

"Was that a coincidence?" Nathan asked.

His attorney didn't answer immediately.

"I've thought about that," he said carefully, "more than once."

Grace stood up and carried Lily to the sofa in the next room.

She came back and stood in the doorway.

"What do we do with the recording?" she asked.

"It establishes intent and a pattern," Nathan's attorney said.

"Combined with the co-authority documents, the timing of the kjdnapping filing, and the financial arrangement — it's a strong foundation.

But we need something current.

Something that ties Margaret and Victoria's family to what happened tonight."

Nathan looked at Harlan.

"You said you know how deep their involvement goes.

How do you know?"

Harlan reached into his coat again.

This time he placed a folded set of papers on the table.

"Margaret has been using a secondary email account to communicate with Victoria's father.

She made the mistake of copying a paralegal who used to work for your father's firm.

That paralegal came to me three weeks ago."

Nathan unfolded the papers.

The top email was dated four days ago.

*"Grace Mercer has been located.

She is planning to make contact with Nathan within the week.

Execute the filing as discussed.

Make sure the child is named specifically — it needs to look like Grace is using her as leverage."*

The email was signed with a name Nathan had seen on board agendas for nine years.

Margaret Voss.

He set the papers down very carefully.

"She named Lily specifically," Grace said.

Her voice had gone quiet in a way that was more frightening than anger.

"She wanted it to look like I was using my own daughter as leverage."

"Yes," Harlan said.

"To make Nathan doubt me."

"To make everyone doubt you.

And to give Victoria's family legal grounds to pursue custody — which would have given them leverage over Nathan indefinitely."

Nathan stood up.

"I want to call Margaret," he said.

His attorney's head came up sharply.

"Nathan—"

"Not to confront her.

I want to hear what she says when she thinks she's still in control." He looked at his attorney.

"Can we record it legally?"

"With your consent, yes.

One-party consent applies in this state."

Nathan picked up his phone.

Grace crossed the room and put her hand on his arm.

"She's dangerous," Grace said.

"She's been planning this for years."

"I know." He looked at her.

"That's why I want to talk to her before she finds out the recording exists."

He dialed.

Margaret picked up on the second ring.

Her voice was warm and unhurried, the voice of someone who had just gotten very good news.

"Nathan.

I heard Victoria left your house tonight.

I'm sorry.

That must have been difficult."

Nathan kept his voice completely even.

"It was a surprise," he said.

"I was hoping you could come by tomorrow.

There are some estate matters I'd like your guidance on."

A brief pause.

"Of course," Margaret said.

"I'll be there at ten."

She hung up.

Nathan set the phone on the table.

His attorney was already writing.

Harlan Cole looked at the door where Lily was sleeping in the next room.

"She doesn't know you have the recording," Harlan said.

"No," Nathan said.

"She'll come here tomorrow thinking she's managing you."

"Yes."

"And you'll be ready."

Nathan looked at the email printouts.

At his father's photograph.

At the crayon drawing still sitting on the counter where he had set it down.

*I new you woud come Daddy.*

"I've been ready," he said quietly, "since the moment Lily looked up at me."

May you like

But across town, in a house Nathan had never visited, Victoria was on the phone.

And the person she was calling was not her father.
