Chapter 2: What the Envelope Knew

**— PART 2 —**
Nathan's hands were shaking as he opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Him.
Grace.
And a newborn baby.
On the back, in his father's handwriting: *"She told me first.
I made the decision.
Forgive me, son."*
Nathan couldn't breathe.
His father had known about Lily from the very beginning.
"Nathan." Victoria's voice cut through the silence.
"Whatever is in that envelope — it doesn't change anything.
The documents are already filed.
Grace is a fugitive.
By morning, Lily will be in state custody."
Grace pulled Lily tighter against her chest.
"You planned this," Nathan said quietly.
Victoria didn't deny it.
"Your father built something great.
I'm not letting a woman who disappeared five years ago walk back in and take half of it."
Nathan looked at his attorney.
"How long have you known?"
The attorney looked at the floor.
"Your father came to me six months before he passed.
He wanted to reverse what he'd done.
But Victoria's family found out — and someone convinced him it was too late."
Nathan turned back to Victoria.
Her expression had shifted.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
Then Lily tugged Nathan's sleeve and held up something small.
A second envelope.
Crumpled.
Addressed in a child's crayon letters.
*"For my Daddy.
From Lily."*
Nathan opened it — and went completely still for the second time that night.
