Chapter 8: Three Board Members Short

Inspector Gallo arrived at eleven that night with a woman from the financial crimes unit named Dr.
Anita Bruni.
She was fifty, precise, and spent the first twenty minutes asking questions and the next forty minutes not speaking at all — just reading the documents Dante had assembled.
When she finally looked up, she spoke directly to Lorenzo.
"The proxy reinterpretation alone is actionable.
But if we can connect the medical suppression to the financial motive — specifically, to who benefits from your incapacitation during the board restructure — this becomes something much larger."
"How much larger?" Lorenzo asked.
"Potentially criminal conspiracy.
Fraud.
Depending on what we find with the Luxembourg account—" She paused.
"And depending on what your cousin's recorded conversation tells us about the board vote."
"He said they needed three more members."
"Which means they already had some." She looked at Gallo.
"We'll need the full board communication records for the past fourteen months."
"I can have those by morning," Dante said.
Bruni nodded.
She looked back at Lorenzo.
"Mr.
Rinaldi.
I need to ask you something directly.
Is there anyone on your security or household staff you are not certain of?"
Lorenzo thought about it honestly.
"Russo, the physio therapist, is gone.
I removed him this afternoon.
Two of the household staff were hired on Celeste's recommendation in the past year.
I haven't cleared them yet."
"Clear them tonight," Bruni said.
"Or isolate them.
If Celeste knows we're moving, she may try to—"
Her phone lit up on the table.
She looked at it.
Then at Gallo.
"That's the Luxembourg trace," she said.
She answered.
Listened for forty seconds.
Then she set the phone down and looked at Lorenzo with an expression that was not quite surprise — more like confirmation of something she had already suspected.
"The Luxembourg account," she said.
"It's registered to a holding company.
That holding company has one named director."
Lorenzo waited.
"Marco Rinaldi," she said.
The room was quiet.
Gallo leaned forward.
"We can move on both of them tonight if you want to do this quickly.
Before morning."
Lorenzo looked at the window.
Outside, the estate was dark and still.
Fourteen months of that stillness.
May you like
Fourteen months of everyone being very kind.
"Do it," he said.
