Chapter 2: What the Child Saw

Part 2 — 👇

Lorenzo didn't move for a long moment.

He just stared at the capsule in his palm.

Then he looked at Mia.

She was watching him with those serious eyes, waiting.

"Where exactly did you find this?" he asked quietly.

"Stuck in the side," she said.

"Under the cushion.

There were two.

I dropped one."

Two.

He had been sitting in that wheelchair every day for fourteen months.

He called his head of security, Dante, and said only four words: "Come to the sunroom."

When Dante arrived and saw the capsule, his face went still in a way that said he understood immediately what it meant.

"How long would something like this take to work?" Lorenzo asked.

Dante didn't answer right away.

"Dante."

"Months," he said.

"If it was consistent.

If no one was checking."

Lorenzo's physio team had never checked.

His specialists had never looked.

They had only ever confirmed what they were told — that the damage was permanent.

He heard heels on the marble floor outside.

Celeste appeared in the doorway, smiling.

The smile lasted exactly one second.

Then she saw what was in his hand.

She didn't speak.

She didn't move.

But her eyes went immediately — not to Lorenzo — to Mia.

What Celeste did next put that little girl in danger.
