Chapter 2: The Woman With the Folder

Two federal agents walked in first.

Then a woman I had never seen before — maybe sixty, silver-haired, holding a manila folder pressed tight against her chest.

Dad went completely still.

"Harrison." Her voice was flat.

"Did you think I wouldn't find out?"

Dad's jaw tightened.

"I don't know who you are."

"Yes you do," she said quietly.

Commander Hayes stepped forward.

"Mr.

Bennett, this is Dr.

Miriam Cole.

She ran the veterans' housing program your foundation was contracted to fund.

For three years."

The woman opened the folder and held up a single page.

"Forty-one families," she said.

"Forty-one families who were told the money ran out.

Forty-one families who lost their homes." Her voice didn't shake.

"The money didn't run out, Mr.

Bennett.

It never reached us."

My mother made a small sound beside him.

Brandon stood up from his seat.

"Dad — what is she talking about?"

Dad said nothing.

Lucas was watching me from the altar.

His eyes were steady, but his hands were clasped so tightly his knuckles had gone white.

"Victoria." His voice barely carried across the chapel.

"I'm sorry.

I didn't know how to tell you."

Commander Hayes placed the sealed envelope on the pew beside my father.

"There's more inside," he said.

"Including a name you'll recognize."

Dad looked down at the envelope and did not touch it.

That was when my mother finally lifted her eyes.

And the expression on her face told me she already knew everything.
