Chapter 2: The Man Who Came Home Too Soon

Lily reached Ethan.

She pulled him into her arms, curling her body around his, shielding him the only way she had left.

He was barely making a sound now.

Just small, shuddering gasps against her chest.

"You have thirty seconds to put that child down," Serena said, "or I will have you removed from this house in handcuffs."

Lily pressed her lips to the top of Ethan's head and did not move.

Then the front door opened.

The room went cold.

Victor Blackwood stood in the entrance.

Still in his coat.

Eyes moving across the foyer in one slow, silent sweep — Ethan's limp arm.

Lily on the floor.

Serena's heel still raised.

Nobody spoke.

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Serena." His voice was quiet.

That was the most dangerous kind.

Serena turned with a smile already forming.

"Victor, darling.

The nanny lost control of the baby and I was just—"

"Don't."

One word.

It stopped her completely.

He crossed the room, crouched down, and looked at Ethan's arm.

Something shifted behind his eyes.

Something that had nothing to do with business.

Then he looked at Lily.

"Tell me everything," he said.

"From the beginning."

Serena's smile disappeared.

And Lily realized — Serena had never once considered that Victor might actually listen.
