Chapter 10: Everything That Grew After

Three months passed.

Ethan's shoulder healed completely.

The follow-up appointment confirmed it — full range of motion, no lasting damage, the doctor visibly relieved in the way doctors are when the answer is good news instead of the other kind.

Lily was there for the appointment.

Victor was there too.

They sat on opposite sides of Ethan on the examination table, and when the doctor said *he's perfectly fine*, Ethan chose that exact moment to grab both of their hands at once and attempt to put Victor's thumb in his mouth.

Victor let him.

Lily looked at the ceiling so Victor wouldn't see her smile.

Serena did not come back.

Her father's lawyers sent a single formal letter confirming the dissolution of the engagement and the removal of Serena's name from all estate documents.

Victor signed it, filed it, and said nothing more about it.

Edmund Montigue's business arrangements with the Blackwood network were quietly restructured over the following weeks.

Lily didn't ask for details.

She understood enough to know that the restructuring was the consequence, and that it was specific, and that it was enough.

Rosa stayed.

She brought tea she hadn't been asked for and occasionally appeared in the nursery doorway just to report on small household news that didn't require reporting, and Lily understood that this was Rosa's way of saying she had chosen a side and was glad of it.

On a Tuesday evening in October, Victor came to the nursery after Ethan was already asleep.

He stood in the doorway — still, always, in the doorway — and looked at Ethan for a moment.

Then he said: "I'd like to ask you something.

And I want you to answer honestly, even if the answer is no."

Lily set down the book she'd been reading.

"All right."

"I'd like you to stay," he said.

"Not as Ethan's nanny.

Or — not only as that." He paused.

He was not a man who struggled for words, which meant the pause was deliberate.

"I'm aware of what I am and what this house is.

I'm not asking you to pretend otherwise.

But I'd like you to be here.

As part of this.

Whatever that means, at whatever pace makes sense."

Lily looked at him.

At the man in the doorway who had listened when no one expected him to.

Who had crouched on marble floors and fired the people who looked away and sent security footage to lawyers before breakfast and thanked her, repeatedly, for simply staying.

"I'm already here," she said.

He looked at her for a moment.

Then he came into the room — fully, for the first time, without stopping at the threshold — and sat in the chair across from her, and they talked quietly for a long time while Ethan slept between them.

She told him more about Clara.

He listened without trying to fix it.

He told her more about Ethan's mother.

She listened the same way.

Outside, the October wind moved through the grounds of the Blackwood estate, and inside the nursery the lamp made a warm circle of light, and Ethan slept with his good arm curled under his chin and his breathing slow and even and completely untroubled.

Lily looked at him — this child who was not hers, who had never been hers, who she would have crossed any room in the world to reach — and felt something settle in her chest that had not been settled in a very long time.

Not fixed.

Not without grief.

Not simple.

But real.

And when Victor reached across the space between their chairs and rested his hand near hers on the armrest — not taking it, just near it, just present — she turned her palm up.

He took her hand.

Ethan slept on.

And the lamp burned quietly, and the wind moved outside, and the house that had once felt like a place where Lily had to make herself small held her, for the first time, like she had always belonged in it.

Have you ever stayed in a difficult situation because something — or someone — told you it was worth it?
