Chapter 2: The Folder She Had Been Carrying

Connor came out of surgery four hours later.
The first face he saw was Samantha's.
She was still in the same chair, still in the same clothes, with a paper cup of cold coffee in her hands.
She hadn't left.
Evelyn, Alison, and Brandon were gone.
A nurse told him they had left after forty minutes.
Said they'd come back "when he was feeling better."
Connor reached for Samantha's hand.
She let him take it, but she didn't squeeze back.
"I need to see my bank records," he said.
"All of them.
Seven years."
She opened her bag and placed a folder on his lap.
"I already pulled them," she said quietly.
"I've had them for three months."
He stared at her.
"Three months?"
"I was waiting to see if you'd ever notice on your own."
His hands shook as he opened the folder.
Page after page of withdrawals.
Every month.
Every year.
Not savings.
Not a house fund.
The money had gone to Brandon's failed businesses, Alison's vacations, and Evelyn's personal account.
Over 330,000 dollars.
Gone.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from a number he didn't recognize.
*"Connor.
There's something about your mother you still don't know.
Something Samantha never told you because she was protecting you.
Call me."*
He looked up at his wife.
Her expression didn't change.
But her eyes did.
