Chapter 1: The Woman Who Stayed

"If your mother kept your salary for 7 years, then let her come and pay to save you."

Samantha said those words in the emergency room of a private hospital in San Diego while Connor doubled over in a plastic chair, one hand pressed against the right side of his abdomen and his shirt soaked with sweat.

The surgeon had just explained that he had acute appendicitis, that there were signs of necrosis, and that they needed to operate immediately.

To prepare the operating room, the hospital administration required a deposit of 10,000 dollars.

Connor looked at his wife, expecting her to run to the cashier, call someone, cry, or beg for help.

But Samantha remained completely still, her arms crossed, with a stillness that sent a chill through him.

"How can you talk to me like that?" he whispered, barely able to breathe.

"I could d!e."

"I know," she replied.

"I also know that for 7 years, you never gave me your salary.

You never asked how I paid for groceries, Leo's school, gas, or medicine.

Your mother received every single penny, and you said it was for our own good.

So call her."

The memory str*ck him like a stone.

Three days after their wedding, Evelyn had asked for her son's payroll card.

She claimed that young people wasted money and that she would save it to help them buy a house.

Connor, who had recently been promoted at an engineering firm in San Diego, earned 4,000 dollars a month.

Without thinking twice, he handed over the card and PIN.

Samantha protested.

Evelyn called her greedy.

Connor forced her to stay quiet.

From then on, his mother gave them only 500 dollars a month "for expenses." Samantha worked as an accounting assistant, bought secondhand clothes, stretched their groceries as far as possible, and repaired her shoes.

Whenever she asked for the card back, Connor accused her of trying to tear the family apart.

Trembling, he called his mother and put her on speakerphone.

Evelyn answered with party music playing in the background.

"Mom, I'm in the emergency room.

I need 10,000 dollars for an operation.

Take the money from my account and come, please."

There was a brief silence.

"Oh, son, you picked a terrible time," she replied.

"I already withdrew your salary this month.

Brandon needed capital to import screens, and Alison put a down payment on a truck.

I don't have anything."

"And what about the savings from these 7 years?"

"I lent that to Brandon too.

He's family.

Your wife should figure it out.

That's what she works for, isn't it?"

The call ended.

Connor stared at the screen, unable to comprehend that his own mother had just refused to give him the money he had earned himself.

Samantha opened her worn-out purse and pulled out an envelope containing 5,000 dollars.

"This is everything I saved by selling desserts and preparing tax returns late at night.

I'll pay half because, despite everything, I don't want you to go.

Get the rest from the family you always put above us."

As the orderlies began wheeling him away, the elevator doors opened.

Evelyn, Alison, and Brandon stepped out.

She was carrying six oranges.

Alison had a designer handbag.

Brandon was playing with the keys to a brand-new truck.

None of them had brought any money.

And as Connor was wheeled into the operating room, he heard his sister say they should go get tacos because "appendicitis isn't that serious."

He couldn't believe what he was about to discover…

---

Seven years of his salary.

Gone.

And Samantha had been quietly saving every dollar she could — alone.
