Chapter 2: The Name on the Account

**— PART 2 —**
The officer held up the folder and looked straight at Mason.
"Where did you get this?"
Mason said nothing.
His face had gone white.
I took one look at the document and felt the ground shift under me.
My name was still on the deed — but someone had added Teresa's name beside it.
The signature at the bottom wasn't mine.
"That's a forgery," I said.
Teresa stopped screaming.
For just one second, she went completely still.
Then she looked at Mason.
That look said everything.
The officer pulled Mason aside.
I heard him say quietly, "There's a notary stamp on this.
We're going to need to know who signed off."
Amy was still in the car with Frederick.
I had told her to stay there.
But when I glanced back, I saw her watching through the window, holding our son against her chest, her face pale and exhausted.
She had known something was wrong for months.
She had never said a word because she was afraid of what I would do.
Then my aunt Betsy walked up behind me and said something I never expected.
"Connor.
There's something else you need to know.
About the account your mother asked you to set up last year."
I turned slowly.
"What account?"
Betsy looked down at her hands.
"The one she said was for Frederick's future."
