Chapter 1: The Birthday That Was Never About Frederick

My mother humiliated my wife on our son's first birthday, forcing her to serve everyone while caring for our sick baby.
But she never expected me to walk through that back door...
My own mother turned my son's first birthday into a nightmare.
She humiliated my wife in front of twenty relatives, forced her to serve everyone while caring for our sick baby, and treated her like a servant inside her own home.
I walked in expecting a family celebration.
Instead, I discovered a cruel plan to take control of my house, my money, and everything I had worked for.
"In this house, I make the rules.
Your wife is only good for giving birth and washing dishes."
Those words stopped me cold as I stood just outside my backyard in Nashville, listening to my mother, Teresa, brag about the party she had thrown inside my home.
My name is Connor Bradley, and I'm a construction engineer.
That Friday was my son Frederick's first birthday, and I had left work early because I wanted to surprise my wife, Amy.
I was carrying a birthday cake, a small pendant with the letter "F" for my son, and the blue dress Amy had admired online but never bought for herself.
For months, I had been sending my mother three thousand dollars every month because she claimed she was helping Amy with groceries, bills, and the baby after Frederick was born.
I trusted her.
Until I stepped through that back door.
My house was packed with relatives.
There was expensive seafood, bottles of liquor, decorations, and piles of food I had never approved.
My mother stood proudly in a brand-new dress, telling everyone,
"My son works hard.
He gives me the money because he trusts me to take care of this family."
Then someone asked where Amy was.
My aunt Betsy laughed.
"She's in the kitchen.
I told her to prepare everything.
A woman who is financially supported should earn her place."
My stomach dropped.
I walked inside and found my wife seated on a cheap plastic stool, surrounded by dirty dishes, greasy pans, and half-empty serving trays.
She was holding our feverish baby in one arm while scrubbing dishes with the other.
She looked exhausted.
Hungry.
Completely broken.
The moment she saw me, the piece of bread she had been eating fell from her mouth.
"Connor...
your mother said I couldn't stop yet.
I still have to serve the coffee."
I took Frederick from her arms.
The second I touched his forehead, I felt how hot he was.
"We're leaving," I said.
Amy immediately glanced toward the backyard.
Fear filled her eyes.
"She's going to be angry."
Those words hurt me more than anything my mother had said.
My own wife was afraid inside our home.
I got Amy and Frederick into the car and called 911.
I told the dispatcher that my relatives were inside my home without my permission, that my wife had been pressured into working while caring for our sick child, and that I was afraid something even more serious was happening.
Minutes later, the police arrived.
My mother started screaming.
She shoved an officer and insisted that the house belonged to her.
Then my cousin Mason suddenly tried to slip out through the side gate carrying a folder he had been hiding.
The police stopped him.
When they opened it, everyone went silent.
Inside was the original deed to my house.
As my mother was placed in handcuffs, still screaming insults at Amy, I finally understood the truth.
That birthday party had never been about celebrating my son.
It was only the first step in a plan to st*al everything we owned.

What will Connor do next — and will Teresa ever face real consequences for what she did to Amy?
