Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Envelope

Part 2 ⬇️

Emily didn't move at first.

She just stood in that doorway, holding a manila envelope against her chest like it was the only thing keeping her upright.

Lily broke free from my arms and ran to her.

"Mommy!

Daddy said you were gone!"

Emily dropped to her knees and held her daughter so tight I had to look away.

Ryan found his voice.

"This is insane.

She's supposed to be—"

He stopped himself.

Vanessa turned slowly.

"Supposed to be what, Ryan?"

The room was so quiet I could hear the candles flickering.

I walked toward Ryan and said, low enough for only him to hear: "The accident wasn't an accident, was it?"

His jaw tightened.

Emily stood up.

She wasn't shaking anymore.

She crossed the room and placed the envelope on the table in front of Vanessa.

"Open it," she said quietly.

Vanessa looked at Ryan.

He said nothing.

She opened it.

Whatever was inside made the color drain from her face.

She looked up at Ryan with something I hadn't expected to see on a bride's face at her own wedding.

Not anger.

Fear.

Then a phone on the head table lit up with a name neither Ryan nor Vanessa wanted anyone in that room to see.

---

What's inside that envelope — and whose name just appeared on that phone?
